If there are any perks to being a potty-mouthed goon-guzzling wine blogger, it’s getting invited to cool shit like Cabin Fever Festival.
There is one great fuckin’ party happening in Margaret River from the 19th to the 28th July, all with the sole intention of breaking up your relationship with your doona and grabbing winter by the balls! With 35 unique events fully loaded with premium wine, local and international wine makers, a ridiculous variety of food, roaring fires, live music, beer and hip hop yoga, this is a festival like no other.
While you may not have heard me complain about it in the past 17 minutes, I am actually pregnant AF. As I’m Due to give birth at approximately the same time as the hip hop yoga brunch and pretty sure a big sneeze could pop this baby out right now (let alone all that stretching and bending), I wont be travelling more than thirty minutes from my chosen metropolitan maternity hospital for the next few weeks.
But I do think you should go. You bloody deserve it. And because I am an awesome person (and to take my mind off my pregnancy-induced heartburn) I’ve already done the research on the best wine-related activities for you to check out!
Getting blind to improve your wine knowledge
We’ve all been blind drunk at some point, right? C’mon Mavis don’t lie, even you did it once or twice! Well this has absolutely nothing to do with that. This is a classy kind of blind tasting where you taste different wines out of a sexy black wine glass so you can’t see the wine (but you can still see the hottie across from you). This helps you focus on your other senses, like how the wine tastes and smells (or the sounds of that hottie’s dulcet tones). It’s being run by Cape Mentelle’s own winemaker so of course I expect this event to be nothing short of kickarse.

Bringing the big guns out of the cellar
Cape Grace have literally ransacked their cellar and are doing a special Shiraz museum tasting of their best small batch, basket pressed Shiraz releases from a 15 year period. Holy shit, if that hasn’t made your mouth start watering and your nose twitch I don’t know what will.

Margaret River Reds vs the World
This title fight has a whiff of a Green v Mundine bout in that we are, of course, all going for the local hero who isn’t a total knob. In this amazing line up you get to decide if local Pinots and Cabernets really should win on a TKO over international Chiantis, Burgundies, and other championship contenders all of which are paired to perfection with delectable dishes. This masterclass (which has absolutely nothing to do with boxing) is hosted by Kate Lamont whom I have had a massive girl crush on for some time now, so go even if it’s just to hear her talk.

It’s make your own wine time!
Look, I’ve always fancied myself as a bit of a dab hand at mixing shit together, and really, how hard can making a wine blend be? Literally thousands of people are doing it every day.
What’s that you say? It’s actually really hard and those people (“winemakers”) spend years learning, researching, and applying that knowledge in the pursuit of “the perfect blend?”…. Okayyy but how fun would it be to have a crack at it?
In this Wine Blending Masterclass with the Clairault Streicker Wines team, you get to:
- Learn about wine blending from the pros
- Taste incredible wine
- Eat cheese and palate cleansers
- Create your very own signature blend, and take home a bottle to show off to your friends (you don’t have to share it with them though it’s your special one)
How cool does that sound?

The Spice is Right
Every time I have spicy food I have an animated conversation with myself and anyone else who’ll listen. What wine should I match with it?
In this class you’ll learn how acids, bitterness, texture, savoury and sweetness in spices and wine interact with one another. I’ll call you next time I head for a curry.

I would go to this class for the punny name alone but also you get to taste port, and port is bloody fantastic. Happs Wines are taking visitors through tasting stations showcasing the nuanced flavours of different fortified wines, and pairing the delicious port-iness with share platters.
